Mixed Bed Resin

  • Virgin mixed bed DI resin in 25 litre bags: FaceLift, Unger and Tulsion MB115, blended ready to pour.
  • One resin, many uses: pure water window cleaning, aquarium RODI refills, spot free rinsing and other RO DI systems.

Mixed bed resin is a blend of two ion exchange resins in one bag: cation and anion beads, pre mixed in the right ratio. Water passing through the bed gives up its dissolved minerals and comes out deionised at 0 ppm. It is the final stage in almost every pure water setup, whatever the water is for.

Every bag here is virgin resin, blended once and never regenerated, which is what gives a fresh fill its full capacity. The 25 litre bags come from FaceLift, Unger and Tulsion MB115, and Unger HydroPower owners are covered with the DI Ultra packs and 2 litre replacement bags made for those systems.

  • Window cleaning: fills the DI stage of a water fed pole system, from a single DI Resin Vessel in a soft water area to the polishing stage after an RO membrane in a hard one.
  • Aquarium RODI: the same chemistry sold in small pouches for reef keeping. A 25 litre bag refills a Refillable Resin Cartridge or DI pouch many times over, at a fraction of the per litre price.
  • Spot free rinsing: detailers use deionised water the same way window cleaners do. Water at 0 ppm dries on paint and glass without water marks.
  • Custom PC loops: deionised water is the usual base for a watercooling loop, and a small DI vessel produces it on tap.

The practical points are the same whatever you use it for. Mixed bed resin is single use, so check the output with a Handheld TDS Meter and change the bed once the reading starts to climb. In hard water areas an RO membrane in front makes each fill last far longer. A Blue Resin Funnel keeps the swap tidy.

What is mixed bed resin?

Mixed bed resin is two ion exchange resins blended in one bed: cation beads that capture positively charged minerals and anion beads that capture negatively charged ones. Together they strip everything dissolved in the water in a single pass, taking the TDS reading to 0 ppm. Virgin mixed bed resin, which is all we sell, has never been regenerated, so it starts at full capacity.

Is this the same as water softener resin?

No. A water softener uses cation resin only and regenerates it with salt; it swaps hardness minerals for sodium but leaves the water full of dissolved solids. Mixed bed DI resin removes the dissolved solids themselves, takes the water to 0 ppm, and is not regenerated in use. If the goal is spot free drying or pure water, mixed bed is the right resin; a softener will not get you there.

Can I use this resin in an aquarium RODI unit?

Yes. Mixed bed resin is the standard final polishing stage in a RODI unit, and the resin sold in small aquarium pouches is the same chemistry as these bags. A 25 litre bag refills a standard DI cartridge or pouch many times over. If your unit takes 10 inch cartridges, the Refillable Resin Cartridge lets you keep the shell and just replace the beads.

Does it work for spot free car rinsing or PC watercooling?

Yes to both, because the job is the same: water with nothing dissolved in it. A small DI vessel filled with mixed bed resin gives a spot free final rinse that dries without water marks on paint or glass. For a custom PC loop, deionised water is the usual base; coolant additives are outside what we sell, so check your loop manufacturer's guidance for those.

How long does mixed bed resin last?

It depends on the TDS of the water going in and how much you put through. Soft water or RO water can mean months from a fill; hard tap water straight through the bed can exhaust it in weeks. The reliable check is a TDS meter on the output: 0 ppm means the bed is working, and a climbing reading means it is time to change.

Which brand should I choose?

All three are virgin mixed bed ion exchange resin, so the chemistry is the same and the choice comes down to price per bag and brand preference. The one exception is Unger HydroPower DI systems, which take their own resin packs and bags rather than a loose fill, and both are in this collection.
