Description

Some marks will not come off with a washer. Fly spots baked onto a shop front, sap down a conservatory, the grey film along the bottom of a frame. You can reach for a blade, but then you are detailing every pane afterwards and working around anything a blade should not touch. The Jitterbug sits in between.

It is a flat hand scrubber that holds a walnut pad, made from real crushed walnut shell. Walnut is hard enough to cut through grime and softer than the glass, so it lifts the muck without the scratch risk of a metal pad. The pad holds on with hook and loop, so it peels off to rinse and goes back on square.

The body is 3D printed in PETG rather than injection moulded. You will see the print lines, which is worth knowing before it turns up, but PETG is a tough plastic that copes with the soaps and solvents living in a van. The handle is a long wave you grip with the whole hand for pressure on the glass, and it hooks over a belt or a pocket when you are not on it.

  • Walnut pad included: real crushed walnut shell, cuts grime without the scratch risk of a metal pad. Spares are the 6 inch Maykker Walnut Pad, sold in packs of five.
  • Hook and loop: the pad peels off to rinse and goes straight back on.
  • Doubles as a hand mop: takes a 6 inch mop washer such as the Maykker Scotsman Mop Washer if you want to wet and wash with it.
  • Wave handle: full hand grip for pressure, and it hooks over a belt or pocket between panes.
  • 190g: light enough to live in the bag rather than the van.

Worth knowing: the walnut pad is not recommended for tinted or filmed glass, low-E coated glass, or bulletproof glass. On any of those, test somewhere out of sight first or use a soft washer instead. That is a limit of the pad rather than the tool, and the same goes for any abrasive.

It earns its place if you do a lot of low work: shop fronts, ground floor commercial, conservatories and frames. It is a hand tool, so it is no use at height.

Safety

Glass to avoid

  • The walnut pad is not recommended for tinted or filmed glass, low-E coated glass, or bulletproof glass. An abrasive can mark the coating or the film rather than the dirt sitting on it.
  • If you are not sure what you are looking at, test a small area out of sight first, or use a soft washer instead.

Use and care

  • Keep it wet: work with plenty of solution. Scrubbing dry drags grit across the glass, which is how scratches start.
  • Rinse the pad: peel it off and rinse the grit out regularly rather than working it back into the next pane.
  • Check the pad: swap it once it has packed down or picked up anything hard. A worn pad does less and risks more.
  • Storage: PETG handles normal van conditions, but do not leave it on a dashboard in direct summer sun for long stretches.

RECENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the walnut pad and why walnut?

It is an abrasive pad made from real crushed walnut shell. Walnut is hard enough to cut through baked on grime but softer than glass, which is why it is used on delicate surfaces where a metal pad or a harsh scourer would leave marks. It is the same principle as walnut blasting on paintwork. One pad comes with the tool, held on with hook and loop so you can peel it off, rinse the grit out and put it straight back.

What glass should I not use it on?

Avoid tinted or filmed glass, low-E coated glass and bulletproof glass. On those the coating or film sits on the surface, so an abrasive can mark the coating rather than just the dirt on top of it. That is a limit of any abrasive pad and not specific to this one. If you cannot tell what you are dealing with, test a small area out of sight first, or use a soft washer and let the solution do the work.

Can I use it as a hand mop?

Yes. Take the walnut pad off and fit a 6 inch mop washer instead, and it works as a hand mop for wetting and washing. The Scotsman, HedgeHog and Python all come in a 6 inch, so pick whichever pile you already get on with. You can see them in the Maykker range. It is a genuinely useful second job for the tool if you do a lot of low glass and would rather not carry a separate T-bar.

Can I get replacement walnut pads?

Yes. The pad is the consumable here, and the hook and loop backing means it is meant to be swapped once it packs down. Spares are the 6 inch Maykker Walnut Pad, sold in packs of five, so one pack keeps you going a long while. Rinsing the pad out properly after each job still makes a real difference to how long each one lasts, because it is trapped grit that wears a pad down rather than the scrubbing itself.

Is 3D printed plastic strong enough for daily work?

It is printed in PETG, which is a tougher and more heat resistant plastic than the PLA used for most desktop printing, and it stands up to the soaps and solvents you carry. Being honest about what you get: you will see the print layer lines, and it will not have the moulded finish of a mass produced tool. It is a hand tool that gets pushed against glass rather than something load bearing, so the printing is not the weak point. Just do not leave it cooking on a dashboard all summer.

Will it clip onto my belt?

The wave in the handle is shaped to hook over a belt, a pocket or the edge of a bucket, so it hangs there between panes instead of going back in the bag every time. It works with a Maykker Trident Belt or a SmartBag, and it will sit on the pocket of your trousers just as happily. At 190g there is not much to it, so it is not going to drag your belt down.

What is it best used for?

Low work where the dirt has bonded to the glass. Shop fronts with fly spots, ground floor commercial, conservatory roofs and side panels, and the grey film that builds up along the bottom of frames. It is a hand tool, so it is no help at height, and for general maintenance cleaning a washer and squeegee will still be quicker. Think of it as the tool you pick up when the washer has already had a go and something is still there.

How do I stop it scratching the glass?

Keep it wet and keep it clean. Most scratching from any pad comes from grit picked up off the frame or the ground and then dragged across the glass, not from the pad itself. Work with plenty of solution, rinse the pad out regularly, and give the glass a quick look over before you start on anything that has been sitting in a building site or near a road. Peel the pad off and check the face of it if you have dropped the tool.
