Description

Every bucket on a belt has the same problem. You lift the mop out, it runs down the outside of the bucket and onto your trousers, and by mid morning you have a wet leg and a customer watching you drip across their floor. The Grackle is built around fixing that.

It uses a reclaim system that catches what comes off the mop and feeds it back into the reservoir. Maykker hold two US patents on it. In practice that means less on your leg, less on the carpet inside occupied offices and shops, and less solution wasted over a day. Filled to about an inch below the top it holds around 20oz, which is enough for a decent run of internal glass before a refill.

The body is 1000 denier Cordura over an industrial grade vinyl lining, with a structured plastic panel in the back so it keeps its shape and sits flat against your leg instead of folding as it empties. Three large tool slots take up to an 18 inch channel, and two loops on the outside hold a Maykker Handy Sleeve, a scraper, a spare squeegee or a towel.

  • Reclaim system: mop run off goes back in the bucket rather than down your leg.
  • Fits an 18 inch channel: a full size squeegee sits in properly, not just a detailing tool.
  • 1000 denier Cordura: the heavy grade, used for kit that gets dragged through hedges and thrown in vans.
  • Structured flat back: holds its shape and stays against the leg instead of swinging.
  • Two exterior loops: somewhere for the scraper and the spare tool that usually end up in a pocket.
  • Just under 1lb empty: light enough to wear through a full day.

Worth knowing before you order: this is the model without the tip function. There is no unclip and pour, so you empty it by taking it off and tipping it out by hand. If that matters to how you work, the Maykker Silencer 2 has the tipping reservoir instead.

Made in the USA, double and triple stitched with bar tacks at the stress points. Machine washable on a cold gentle cycle, which is worth doing now and then because belt buckets get grim faster than anything else you carry.

Setting up

  • Clip it onto a tool belt or straight onto the belt of your trousers. The clip takes a belt up to 3.5 inches (9cm) wide.
  • Fill the reservoir leaving about an inch clear at the top. That gives you roughly 20oz of solution without it slopping over as you walk and climb.

Use and care

  • Emptying: this model has no tip function, so take it off the belt and pour it out rather than trying to tip it while you are wearing it.
  • Washing: machine washable on a cold gentle cycle. Worth doing regularly, as solution and glass dirt build up in the lining.
  • Drying: stand it open to air dry rather than putting it away damp and sealed up.
  • Loading: keep blades and scrapers in the exterior loops rather than loose in the reservoir, so they are not sitting in solution.

RECENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does the reclaim system actually do?

It catches the water that runs off your mop as you lift it out and channels it back into the reservoir instead of letting it run down the outside. That is the single most annoying thing about working off a belt bucket: a wet trouser leg by mid morning, and drips on a customer's floor when you are inside occupied premises. Maykker hold two US patents on the design. The side effect is that you waste less solution over a day, since what would have ended up on the floor stays in the bucket.

Does it have the tip function?

No, this is the model without it. There is no unclip and pour, so to empty it you take it off the belt and tip it out by hand. Worth knowing before you order, because it is the main difference between this and the Maykker Silencer 2, which has a tipping bottom reservoir. If you empty and refill constantly through the day the tip function is genuinely useful. If you tend to fill once and work through it, you will not miss it.

Will an 18 inch squeegee fit?

Yes. The slots take up to an 18 inch (45cm) channel comfortably, which is not a given on belt buckets, as plenty are sized for detailing tools and leave a full size squeegee sticking out at an angle. There are three large slots in total, so a squeegee, a mop and a third tool all sit in without fouling each other.

How much solution does it hold?

Around 20oz, roughly 590ml, filled to about an inch below the top. Leaving that inch matters more than it sounds, because filled to the brim it will slop over the edge as you walk and climb. For internal work 20oz covers a decent run of glass before a top up, and the reclaim system stretches it further than an open pouch of the same size.

Will it fit my belt?

The clip takes a belt up to 3.5 inches (9cm) wide, so it goes onto a proper tool belt or straight onto the belt of your trousers. It is a sturdy plastic clip rather than a loop you have to thread, so you can take it off at the end of the day without unthreading your belt. The back panel is flat and structured, which keeps it against your leg instead of swinging as you move.

What is it made from?

A 1000 denier Cordura outer over an industrial grade vinyl lining, with a structured plastic panel in the back. 1000 denier is the heavy end of Cordura, the grade used for kit that gets dragged through hedges and thrown in vans. Seams are double and triple stitched with bar tacks at the stress points, which is where cheaper belt buckets tend to give up first. Made in the USA.

Can I wash it?

Yes, machine washable on a cold gentle cycle. Worth doing every so often, because belt buckets collect solution residue and glass dirt in the lining faster than anything else you carry. Let it air dry standing open rather than putting it away damp and sealed up.

How does it compare to the Maykker Silencer 2?

Both are top end Maykker belt buckets and the main split is the tip function. The Silencer 2 has a bottom reservoir you unbuckle and tip out, with three slots sized for an 18 inch mop and two squeegees. The Grackle is the simpler shape, built around the reclaim system, with no tipping. If you want the fastest empty and refill, the Silencer. If you would rather have the simpler shape and can live without the tipping base, the Grackle.
